Popular Snorkeling Trip from San Juan
The Spanish Virgin Islands of Vieques & Culebra has an interesting and unique history. It’s important to get to know the history of a place in order to understand how people live. Although small, El Polvorin Museum offers a condensed look at the past of Culebra, that adults and children will enjoy. At Museo El Polvorin you can enjoy exhibits of native “Tainos” including wooden canoe children. The museum also has exhibits of the Navy’s artifacts when Culebra was used as a bombing testing area.
There’s a wall with black and white photos taken around the island dating back to the 1930s. The museum has movies/documentaries about the history of the island and a learning corner on the preservation of turtles. Friendly volunteers will be happy to answer any questions you may have, they’re a wealth of knowledge. A $1 donation is appreciated, you can help maintain the museum by also making a purchase at the little gift shop, they have great books, a few pieces of jewelry, shirts, and more.
